"1959: MITCHELL 50/4: Note the date, 1959, even more importantly the country of both design and manufacture, England! The only four cylinder 50cc two stroke motorcycle racer in the world with jewel like individual cylinder displacement of nominally 12cc. Each cylinder has a bore of 25.3mm and a stroke of 25mm with a compression ratio of 10.1, maximum power was 5bhp @7,000 rpm driving through a five speed gearbox. The engine is suspended from a diamond frame arrangement, canted into the airstream with downdraft carburetion, staggeringly with one Amal 10mm carburettor per cylinder. The suspension is leading link type at the front, incredibly it utilizes a rubber link as the damping medium and conventional dampers are at the rear. Note the petrol tank with substantial scalloping for the riders knees, it is a work of art!
The motorcycle was designed by Eric Fity-Hugh and manufactured by Duncan Mitchell of Stevenage, UK. The motorcycle was never raced due to financial problems."
